ABOUT

The FARM

Candar Farms was purchased in 1998.  An old fence line,  a wall from a stone barn and an antique plow tell a little bit about the history of the land. The farm had been cropped for many years and back in the 60's sheep had grazed a portion of the property.  Today the sheep have returned and the land is being restored to grasses.  Slowly the cropped land is being converted into a small grazing operation .

Candar Farms is located 60 miles north of Milwaukee Wisconsin.  A portion of the land is still farmed using no till methods and crop rotation helping to enhance soil quality. The remaining land has been turned into grazing land using rotational grazing, selective mowing and over seeding.  During 2014 NRCS (National Resource Conservation Service) was contacted and an EQUIP grant was utilized which helped to expand the grazing land. Each year we reclaim a little more of the cropped land and we work with NRCS to improve our land management .

The grass land is managed through rotational grazing providing a foraged based diet which supports a flock of  60 - 80 ewe lamb pairs for five to six months out of the year. A hay crop is taken off the largest field during July after the flock has grazed and regrowth is allowed. This gives us  better quality hay to be used over the winter.   We set our rotation of the sheep through the pastures to a 6- 8 week period meaning that we do not return sheep to a grazed area prior to a minimum of six weeks after it has been grazed. This decreases the exposure of summer parasites and helps to maintain healthy pastures which in turn grow healthy sheep.

Conservation is a major goal of the farm attempting to keep agriculture in balance with nature and minimizing the use of chemicals.  The pastures are a blend of grasses and legumes helping to restore nitrogen without adding commercial fertilizer.  Our goal is to produce healthy breeding stock for ourselves and for our customers.
